Congratulations to Gareth James, Course Team Leader for A-level Geology at Cirencester College, who was recently recognised at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Awards.
Gareth, who also teaches A-level Environmental Science, won the Sir Colin Humphreys Education Award in the Contribution to Outreach category, which recognises the crucial contribution that those working in the 5-18 education sector make to enhancing student’s literacy in STEM, in particular through the teaching of materials, minerals, and mining topics in the curriculum.
Gareth was nominated for this award by a group of his former students, who wrote in their nomination reference “Gareth holds all the qualities of an excellent teacher and more; he is kind, patient, and funny, but most of all Gareth is passionate and through his passion and ability to share knowledge, Gareth has inspired many of us to pursue further education and careers in the geo-environmental sector. As Gareth’s former students, we agree that he has had a lasting impact on our education, careers, and lives, and we would like to recognise him for sharing his passion”
Gareth said “I was really surprised to get the email to say I had been nominated for the award, let alone to also win it. It was a huge honour and very humbling to find out what students that I taught right at the beginning of my time at Cirencester College were still thinking of my teaching all these years later!”
