Today, hundreds of members of staff, students and family members at Cirencester College gathered for a Remembrance Service to honour service men and women whose lives were lost or affected by conflict.
Uniformed Services students opened the College’s annual service with a parade in which they marched to gather at the College cenotaph. Interim Principal, Matt Reynolds, welcomed everyone with a touching speech which highlighted the importance of honouring soldiers from Britain and all over the Commonwealth for the sacrifices they made and continue to make today.
The service was accompanied by a choir of students from the College’s student-led theatre group The Sundial Theatre Company, who sang Jerusalem with the crowd followed by an emotive performance of ‘Keep Holding On’ by Avril Lavigne, Glee arrangement after a prayer was read by Reverend Canon Graham Morris.
After the trench whistle, there was a wreath laying on the cenotaph by students from the cadets and girl guiding association before the last post was played and a two-minute silence was observed at 11am.
The service was then closed by Uniformed Services students marching.
Interim Principal Matt Renyolds said “This has always been a very special event for the College. I am so proud of our ex-service personnel staff and the whole group of people from the College family that make this event possible. Reverand Canon Graham Morris and standard bearers from the Royal British Legion also contributed brilliantly. I am extremely proud of our learners who made this such an outstanding ceremony. These young people are superb whether from our Uniformed Services contingent or choir involved in the proceedings, the media crew who filmed the service, or from those joining in the crowd to spend a moment in contemplation, our learners here are so inspiring. A very fitting and respectful day.”
The service was also watched by over 100 people at home and in classrooms via a live stream coordinated by students in the College’s Media department.
