Recently, Event Planning students ran a cake tombola for staff and students at College to raise money for a charity of their choice.
For this project, the entire class were required to work together as a team to organise, plan and deliver the event.
The students chose Brain Tumour Research as their charity after an inspirational talk from Karen Bell, Head of Higher Needs and Adult Education at College, who has worked with and fundraised for the charity for several years.
The class spent five weeks planning and preparing for the event, with each student taking on different responsibilities ranging from liaising with the charity and the college Marketing department, to designing posters and contacting potential cake suppliers. The class were successful in sourcing a supply of cakes from Tesco, and staff and students at College also made and donated cakes for the cause.
Event Planning lecturer, Stephen Miles, said “The students made a superb effort in coming up with this idea, and worked well with the charity to make it a success. I was impressed by the way they put into practice the theory they had learned on the course to plan and stage the event. The experience will be of sterling value to them in future roles in events, tourism or business.”
Event Planning student, Isabelle, said “I really enjoyed being a part of the team organising the cake sale to fundraise for the Brain Tumour Research charity. We had tremendous support from the community and College staff. It is great to see how we can make a difference when people work together.”
Overall the students raised nearly £145 for the charity.
