Recently, Year 1 Sport and Physical Activity students put their leadership skills into practise by running a dodgeball tournament for primary school pupils.
The students worked with staff from British Dodgeball for the event, which included hosting teams from five local primary schools and officiating each game of the tournament. Each student gained a Dodgeball Leaders Award, a recognised leadership award in the industry which will aid them in pursuing careers in sport, physical activity, and active leisure.
Sport and Physical Activity Tutor, Ross Langworthy, said “As part of our Sport and Physical Activity course, we aim to provide students with as many industry-relevant experiences as possible.
The students were able to quickly learn how to officiate in a sport that was relatively new to them, transferring the theory learned in the classroom into real life situations. The event ran to schedule and there was a real buzz in the Sports Hall throughout the day, which is a massive credit to our students’ ability to enthuse and engage with the children taking part.
Many of our alumni move into roles that involve planning and delivering events, as well as officiating competitions and working with children, so it was great to provide another opportunity for our students to develop their skills and experience in these areas.”
Students across College also had the opportunity to participate in this event and gain the Dodgeball Leaders Award through our enrichment programme.
Jess Smith, Enrichment Lead, said “The collaborative work between the enrichment programme and the Sport and Physical Activity course enabled our students to gain bespoke transferable skills that will prove highly beneficial in their progression from College.
We would like to thank British Dodgeball for delivering the qualification and supporting the wider community to engage in this activity.”
