Cirencester Rotary Club have been working in partnership with Hope Cirencester with the support of Cirencester College to deliver literacy support to adults in the community.

The Adult Literacy Project was initiated in 2021, when Rotary Club members attended a training session delivered by Cirencester College, on supporting adult literacy and breaking down barriers.

Since 2022, volunteers from the Rotary Club have run weekly meetings with the aim of supporting adults in the community with limited reading skills.

Recently, volunteers from the Rotary Club have attended a five-week long course of further training sessions delivered by Cirencester College, that will enable them to offer numeracy support to adults in addition to literacy.

One volunteer said “The course was packed with interesting and informative content. As well as techniques I can use in the future, I was fascinated to learn about the day-to-day challenges faced by anyone with numeracy challenges- I had no real idea of how difficult it must be.”

Rotary Club member Alan Rice-Smith said “This latest course has enhanced and extended our knowledge and awareness of difficulties faced by adults with numeracy as well as literacy. It has also served to bring together like minded organisations like Soroptimists, 41 Club, Rotary Inner Wheel, and The Churn Project.

Together, with more volunteers, we hope to reach and support more adults in the community who face day to day challenges with reading, writing, and numbers.”
