A-level Graphic Communication students have been working on an exciting project with Cirencester Hospital in which they were tasked with designing and painting murals for the Coln Ward.

The students first visited the hospital back in October 2023 to get an idea of the space to inspire their designs. They all designed ideas, and Year 2 students’ Rosie, Erin, Millie, Istvan and Violet’s designs were chosen for the murals.

The murals were finished in July 2024, and Year 1 students kindly helped bring the ideas to life and paint the murals. The paint and materials were funded by our Hospital League of Friends, who kindly offered £200 to pay for the materials.

Year 2 student Millie said “I enjoyed painting the waves with different textures. This was a fun experience and the first mural I have ever done!”

Year 1 student Minna said “This project was great because I got to work with people I’ve never worked with before. I was nervous at the start but in the end, I found it really fun, and it feels like we made a difference.”

Karen, Senior Sister, and Ward Manager, said “The Coln Ward Day Room was a soulless clinical magnolia room which was not used apart from staff meetings. This room is now a bright area for patients to come in and sit and enjoy the art work. The students understood how a ward works, and they were incredibly mature. They were always polite including talking to patients who came in to watch them painting. I now have an assistant who will be using the room and already is for ward activities, such as art therapy, bingo, and chatting. We have also had amazing response from relatives who have had sad news, and the designs give a smile to their faces in a difficult situation.”

Well done to our Graphic Communication students for making a difference in the local community!
